AirTrain and NJ Transit to Midtown

Travelers can use Newark’s AirTrain to reach the Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station and transfer to an NJ Transit train for New York Penn Station.

The current combined trip to Midtown Manhattan is approximately 30 minutes and $17.25 per adult, according to Newark Airport and NJ Transit. Travelers should allow additional time for waiting, walking and transfers.

The general steps are:

1. Follow signs from the terminal to the AirTrain.

2. Take the AirTrain to Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station.

3. Board an NJ Transit Northeast Corridor or North Jersey Coast Line train.

4. Exit at New York Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan.

The AirTrain access fee is included when purchasing the correct NJ Transit airport ticket. Travelers should keep their ticket because it may be required when entering or leaving the airport rail station.

Tickets can be purchased through the NJ Transit mobile application or a station ticket machine before boarding. Purchasing a ticket onboard may result in an additional surcharge.

Important Terminal A AirTrain Information

The existing AirTrain does not connect directly to Terminal A.

Terminal A passengers may need to walk approximately 15 minutes along a covered pathway or take a complimentary shuttle for an approximately five-minute ride.

Travelers carrying heavy luggage, traveling with children or requiring mobility support should allow additional time.

Newark Airport is modernizing the AirTrain system. Temporary service disruptions may occur, with replacement shuttle buses operating when the train is unavailable.

August 2026 AirTrain Shutdown

The Newark AirTrain is scheduled for a complete maintenance shutdown from 8:00 p.m. Saturday, August 22, 2026, until 8:00 a.m. Sunday, August 23, 2026.

Replacement shuttle buses are scheduled to serve:

• Newark Airport Train Station

• Terminal A

• Terminal B

• Terminal C

• Parking and Rental Car Center

• P3 hotel-shuttle station

• P4 parking station

Newark Airport estimates that replacement buses may take approximately 20–25 minutes between the Airport Train Station and passenger terminals under light traffic.

Travelers using NJ Transit or Amtrak during the shutdown should leave additional time and follow the airport’s temporary bus signs.
